Eco-Tourism and Botanical Expeditions in Senegal

Eco-Tourism and Botanical Expeditions in Senegal

Abstract

Eco-tourism, directed at Senegal's unique plant species across diverse habitats, offers the opportunity to develop specialized packages of tourism. Besides improving the appreciation of biodiversity, such a sector brings direct economic benefits to the locals. This paper outlines a business model of guided tours and workshops related to the flora of Senegal, potential economic impacts, and concrete actions to realize and improve eco-tourism ventures.

  1. Opportunity

1.1 Overview

From the thick mangroves along the coast to the vast areas of savannas, the variety of ecosystems in Senegal keeps a wide range of plant species with specific characteristics. Tourism associated with these flora resources can play a dual role: first, it can favor their conservation, and, on the other hand, it enables visitors to experience education while interacting with these resources.

This pie chart illustrates the distribution of Senegal’s major ecosystems. Coastal mangroves cover 30% of the area, savannas represent 45%, and tropical forests account for 25%. This visualization helps in understanding the proportion of different habitats, which are crucial for developing targeted eco-tourism packages.

1.2 Diverse Habitats

Mangroves along the Coast: Saline conditions and home to specialized plant species. Savannas: Dominated by herbaceous plants and shrubs which can resist drought. Tropical Forests: Both rare and endangered plant species are maintained here.
